years ago, july 07 two men follow jennifer pettite and her two daughters from the local supermarket to their home in connecticut and that began the horrific ordeal for the pettite family that as you say involved torture, rape and murder. only the father, a doctor survived able to free himself from the basement where he was tied up by the two men. he escaped to a neighbor's house. the neighbor called 911, at that point it was too late, his wife and daughters were already dead. a 911 call released during the trial for one of the defendants shows what happened before the murders took place. this is when the killers drove jennifer pettite to the bank so that she could get money for them. the person whose voice you here, who called 911 is the bank teller. listen. >> there is no robbery here, but we have a lady who is in our bank right now who says that her husband and children are being held at their house. the people are in a car outside the bank, she is getting $15,000 to bring out to them. that if the police are told they will kill her children and the husband. her name is jennifer pe

on wednesday. prosecutors accused steven haze and another man in the rape, murder and burning of jennifer hawk petit, that's the mother and her two daughters age 11 and 17 back in 2007. the husband, dr. petit was savagely beaten but managed to escape from the basement where he was tied up. now he is pushing for the death penalty. my next guest says that should not happen. former federal prosecutor annmarie macavoy is my guest now. she was aligned with judy guiliani and john mccain, known for being tough on crime. and you say you're against the death penalty in this case? >> you know it's a horrendous case and certainly if there is any case that would warrant it this would be it, but unfortunately to be honest my views over the years have changed. when i was a prosecutor, and that was quite a few years ago i was straupb much lee in favor of the death penalty, although i never wanted to be the one to pull the switch or make the decision. but over the years, having seen how the legal system works, the mistakes that are made in the legal system, how people sometimes are pushed to plead to things,

are difficult for a jurors to hear, not a connecticut mom. jennifer took her two young children who are home schooled to court. they're six and seven years old, to listen to parts of that murder trial. now, she says that it's teaching them about the legal system, but critics are arguing she's exposing the children to potential psychological trauma. is she? let's bring in dr. keith ablow, a psychiatrist and member of the fox news a-team and somebody i respect very much particularly when it comes to issues like this. doc, she home schools them, and a part of that is taking them on different field trips to teach them different things. here is what she says about it, first of all, she told fox news when we contacted her, that she didn't see the most gory details, those pictures of the victims that the jury saw where some adult jurors cried. they were exposed to socks, boots, aerial maps, 9/11 call printouts and damaged vehicles and interactive courtroom dynamic amongst the judge, lawyers and the jury and at that was the point of her lesson. did she make a mistake? >> jamie, you might not need a
